The sun setting on Morro Bay, California

Sunset over Morro Bay, California.

Today's picture features California's picturesque Morro Bay, one of the Golden State's most popular beach destinations. In 1542, Portuguese navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was exploring North America's Pacific coast on behalf of Spain when he noticed a large dome-shaped rock (seen on the right-hand side of this picture). He stopped to check it out, and before leaving the area he gave it the name El Moro. Over time the name morphed into Morro Rock, and the bay and the adjacent city that eventually sprang up nearby took that name as well.

Today, Morro Bay is no longer the bustling fishing hub that it was during the 1940's and 50's, but it has evolved quite nicely into a highly successful tourist destination. And with sunset views like this, it's easy to see why!
