"The Mountains and the Music"

I have written many times about the beautiful Appalachian Mountains
and the amazing music that was born and still thrives within the
hills and "hollers" of the region. Well, today's picture and
accompanying narrative by photographer Denise Boling sort of puts
that all into perspective:
"I really have no true way to express all that this photo means
to me.
It was taken on top of South Holston Dam a couple of years
ago, one
of a batch of many. Although the color version was great,
the black
and white has a different voice.
I'm a mountain girl held by the beauty and lore of this area, from
silver shipments lost on the mountain in the background to the
Bluegrass music rooted deeply in the area. Stories told through the
years of our ancestors coming to these mountains, the battles they
fought cutting out a life in this land, and the battles in which
they
donned uniforms to fight for the freedoms we all still enjoy.
Stories
of how times have changed, and yet those roots - those bonds
- still
grip me in the beauty of the land and the beauty of the
music.
I wonder, did my grandparents have the same awe as they looked
over
this land? Did the feel of the fiddle and the hum of the strings
stir them in the depths of their souls? What wonderful wonders our
God hath wrought." --Denise Boling

I live within a few minutes of where this photo was taken and my
husband and I are very involved in the local music. So you
touched my heart in many ways. Keep up the good work.

Lovely photo and great narrative today!! The photo reminds me of
my middle daughter when she started taking fiddle at 4 yrs old.
I wish that she would have kept it up. She played for a couple
of years and won a first and a second in a couple of contests
that she competed in for her age. She would have been really
good I think. The heritage that you all have in your part of the
country is great and I would love to come and visit that part of
the USA some day. Thanks for sharing this with us Ms. Boling!

Thanks to you all for your wonderful comments. I was born and
still live in this area and have a deep love for it. As for the
fiddle, it sings (as best I can help it) at our church not 5
miles from South Holston Dam. And, Mr. Trees, my daughter also
plays and hopes to play in the high school bluegrass band in a
couple of years. Traditions handed down... Thanks again. It's
truly an honor to be featured on this site.
