November 26, 2006 View Of Mt. Rogers From Meadowview, Virginia

A few days ago I featured
Whitetop Mountain and its snow-covered bald, explaining
that the mountain views always look a little different from one day
to the next depending on the prevailing weather. Well, while I was
standing on that Meadowview, Va hillside shooting Whitetop, I aimed
my camera just a bit to the left and captured a similar image of
Mount Rogers - the highest peak in Virginia.
Mount Rogers and Whitetop are literally twin peaks - not identical
twins mind you, but twins nonetheless. Standing side-by-side within
the 154,000 acre
Mount
Rogers National Recreation Area, they are easily seen from many
locations throughout the Mountain Empire including the section of
Interstate 81 between Marion and Abingdon, Va. They tend to remain
covered with a blanket of snow throughout much of the winter, and
this fall the snow fell a little earlier than usual.
The mountains of southwestern Virginia have much to offer their
visitors, including some of the country's most enjoyable hiking and
biking trails. You can begin your very own mountain adventure at
either Damascus or Marion. The choice is yours, and either way
you're sure to have a wonderful time enjoying the natural splendor
of our region.
