Scenic Nubble Lighthouse

New England is famous for three things: gorgeous autumn leaves,
harsh winters, and spectacular, well-preserved lighthouses...and
plenty of each can be found way up northeast in the beautiful state
of Maine. Today's picture by photographer Andy Ellingwood features
one of Maine's 60+ lighthouses, scenic
Nubble Light which is located just
off the shore of Cape Neddick Point.
The history of Nubble Lighthouse dates all the way back to 1874 when
Congress appropriated a then-enormous sum of $15,000 for the
construction of a lighthouse on Nubble Island. Five years later
Nubble's
beacon was "lit" for the first time, and it has been helping
protect seafarers sailing along the Maine coast ever since.
Although the lighthouse itself cannot be reached by the general public, its
amazing view via telescope from nearby Sohier Park on the
mainland makes it one of Maine's most popular historic structures.
