Picture of the day -
July 17, 2007 Sunset on the Oregon coast

Winston
Rockwell.
Well, master photographer Winston Rockwell has managed to capture
yet another image that is so spectacular that it makes me want to
just hop a plane and head out west for a long vacation. This
masterpiece features a magnificent sunset on the Pacific coast of
Oregon, and the following is Mr. Rockwell's story behind the image:
"I went to a little town called Bandon, on the southern Oregon coast,
for a long-awaited vacation. The Oregon coast is among the most
scenic places I've been, and Bandon certainly proved no exception.
The shore there is mostly smooth, flat sand, but dotted with rocks
the size of 3-story houses, or even larger.
I spent several days exploring places up and down the coast,
photographing scenic spots like Battle Rock, Pistol River, and Cape
Arago. But the shot of the week may be this photo of the sunset on
the beach at Bandon, the night before I was due to leave town.
It
had been cloudy in Bandon most of the time I was there, even
though
other places 25 miles away were often sunny. But on this
night, a
small sliver of clear sky appeared above the western horizon,
just enough to let the sun shine through. As it dipped below the sea,
I
snapped this photo of the clouds and the rocks along the beach. I
got back home and did a little touching up to bring out the colors
and contrast, and this beautiful image emerged...
The image was captured with a Canon 30D and Tamron SP24-135
f3.5-5.6
lens at 37mm, 1/100 @ f7.1."
