Mom's Newest Dinner Guest: A Rose-Breasted Grosbeak

My mom loves watching the many species of wild birds that dine at
her all-you-can-eat avian buffet, and there are always several
varieties of her feathered friends dropping in for a visit and a
good meal - usually several of them at the same time! To say her
birdfeeders are well-used would be quite an understatement.
Well, a few days ago she noticed that there was a new type of bird
eating from her popular "red caboose" feeder. She excitedly
described it to us over the phone, and the next day when Cheria and
I stopped in to see her, the new visitor showed up at the feeder
again! As usual, we had our camera with us so we were able to snap
off a few pictures.
After we got back home, I did a little research on the web and
discovered that mom's new dinner guest is none other than a
Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. From what I read, these colorful birds are
common in the southern Appalachians, but I have yet to talk to
anyone that can recall ever seeing one in this area before. Oh well,
he's here now (yes, it is a male), and mom is glad to have
him over for dinner along with all of her other feathered dinner
guests!
