Santa Caterina del Sasso

Photo of Santa Caterina del Sasso.

Santa Caterina del Sasso is a hermitage that was built right on the edge of a vertical cliff during the 12th century by a wealthy merchant named Alberto Besozzi. Legend has it that Mr. Besozzi was crossing Italy's Maggiore Lake when a fierce storm blew in, tossing his tiny boat to and fro. Thankful for surviving the onslaught, Besozzi made the decision to build the hermitage on the rock ledge at the far end of the lake and live out his remaining years there.

This ancient structure has weathered many a storm itself over the years, and it still stands today on the rocky bank of the Maggiore. Italy is famous for its amazing architecture, and Santa Caterina is one of the country's most beloved historical buildings.
