Picture of the Day - June 27, 2009

Stereo view of Sarychev Peak Volcano

Stereo image of an eruption of Russia's Sarychev Peak volcano.

Have you ever went to see a 3-D movie where the theater handed out those weird glasses with the odd-colored lenses? The result was pretty amazing, wasn't it? Well, today's picture is a stereo image of the Russian volcano Sarychev Peak during an eruption, and although it appears a bit out of focus to the naked eye, it can be viewed in vivid, sharp 3-D with a pair of those wild glasses!

Sarychev Peak lies in Russia's Kuril Island chain which stretches to the northeast of the country of Japan. This eruption occurred on June 12, 2009, and it was photographed by the current crew aboard the International Space Station.
