Picture of the day - July 22, 2008

Crescent moon Rhea occults crescent Saturn

Photo of crescent Rhea occulting crescent Saturn.

Saturn is considered by many to be the most beautiful planet in the solar system, and it has been featured more than once as TodaysPhoto.org's "Picture of the Day". Today's picture features Saturn yet again, this time as the crescent moon Rhea occults the massive ringed planet.

This stunning image was captured by the hugely successful Cassini spacecraft as it was "looking back" almost directly towards the sun. Notice how Saturn's normally majestic rings appear as little more than thin lines due to the almost edge-on perspective of the camera. Once again this most photogenic of heavenly bodies has managed to amaze with her beauty.
