A picturesque farm in rural Scott County, Virginia

As often as we can, Cheria and I make the one hour drive from our
home near Abingdon, Virginia to the tiny rural community of Hiltons
in neighboring Scott County in order to attend the weekly "Old-Time
Music Show" at the
Carter
Family Fold. And although the live Bluegrass and Old-Time music
is always excellent, we enjoy the scenic drive just about as much as
the shows themselves!
Like much of southwestern Virginia, Scott County is primarily
mountains, valleys, hills and "hollers", with plenty of large
limestone rocks and ledges to accent the beautiful landscape. There
are several places along U.S. Route 58 between the Washington County
line and Hiltons that deserve to be on a picture-postcard, a fine
example of which is the scenic farm featured in today's picture.
Cheria and I were on our way to "the Fold" last Saturday afternoon
when we rounded one of 58's numerous curves and noticed this scene
off to our left. A couple of hundred yards on down the road we
spotted a place to pull off and park the car, so I hopped out,
camera in hand, and walked back down the road to what turned out to
be an excellent vantage point from which to take a picture. It was
late in the afternoon and the sunlight had the long, rolling field
and the trees that bordered it lit up quite nicely, and the sky was
a beautiful, deep shade of blue, making for a breathtaking vista the
likes of which we don't encounter very often.
As is often the case with my pictures, the photo doesn't quite
capture the real beauty of the scene, but it does come pretty close.
Cheria and I consider ourselves lucky that our neck of the woods
boasts some of the most magnificent scenery in the entire country,
and we absolutely love photographing as much of it as we possibly
can!
