Autumn at the Seattle Arboretum
Winston Rockwell.
When master photographer Winston Rockwell takes a photograph one can
expect near perfection in the resulting image. Many of his stunning
captures have been featured on this site, and with today's picture
he brings us just a little "slice" of the beauty that is autumn in
the Pacific Northwest. The following is his story behind the image:
"The Seattle Arboretum is one of the largest parks in the city,
and
it is home to a huge variety of trees and flowering plants.
Most
visitors go in spring and early summer, to see the rhodo-
endrons,
azaleas, and other brilliant flowers that bloom in
profusion there,
but autumn offers its own treasures.
The Japanese Garden there is in full fall color about now, and
on a
sunny Saturday in October, it's a gorgeous place to visit.
The
atmosphere is quiet and contemplative in keeping with the
garden's
Zen-like landscape, and it's easy to sit and just soak
in the warm
sun, the riot of color from the vine maples, and
the calm of the
still water.
Visiting a place like this, it's not hard to understand why the
Japanese value places like this; in the midst of the hustle and
bustle of modern life, it's a wonderful place to visit to calm
jangled nerves, get inspiration for haiku, or just to relax and
watch the changing light move slowly across the water and
leaves.
I shot this photograph with a Canon 40D and Tamron 17-35
lens at
17mm, 1/4 second @ f/13." --Winston
Rockwell
