Snowy Mabry Mill

Historic
Mabry Mill is one of the most popular stops along
the entire length of the
Blue Ridge Parkway. Thousands of sightseers
visit this beautiful grist mill every year, and most of them pull
out a camera and snap off a few shots during their stay. One of them
was photographer Sam Davis who captured this gorgeous image of Mabry
Mill after a recent snowfall. Here are a few words from Mr. Davis
about the photograph:
"This photo was made at Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway,
Milepost 176 - about an hour's drive from my home here in Virginia.
It was shot with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel with the Kit 18-55 mm
lens set at 28mm, Tiffen circular polarizer, ISO 100, shutter speed
1/160, and an aperture of f/8. When it snows there, the roads are
not usually plowed and the Parkway is closed to through traffic, so
caution is urged. In the spring, summer and fall, there are
interpreters & musicians, and a restaurant and gift shop are
open.
It's a very popular spot." --Sam Davis

My family drove the Parkway from end to end a couple of autumns ago,
and we were all simply amazed at the magnificent scenery and the
colors of the leaves. After seeing Mr. Davis' shot of Mabry Mill, I
just might have to go back there in the winter some time.
Outstanding shot, Sir!

As a native of the western North Carolina mountain region, I have
had the opportunity to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway and visit Mabry
Mill a number of times. I have taken many wonderful pictures of the
mill over the years, but not one of them even comes close to the
quality of this one. I have always been too "chicken" to drive the
Parkway during snowy weather, but perhaps my wonderful husband would
take me sometime...

It's a dream of mine to go there when there is snow. Your photograph
is absolutely stunning! Mabry Mill is a beautiful place in any
season evidently.

This photo fairly cries out to be made into a Christmas card! Has a
definite "Norman Rockwell" feel to it... Well done!

Grist mills are a favorite subject of mine. I have seen pictures of
Mabry Mill all over the web, but this is the first one I have seen
when there was a blanket of snow on the ground. This is an
exceptional shot.
