"Eagle in flight"

Winston Rockwell.
Today's picture is one which needs no introduction from me, so
here's photographer Winston Rockwell to tell you all about it:
"The bald eagle is a majestic symbol of power and grace. Native
American cultures almost universally revered the eagle as a potent
spirit totem, and our Founding Fathers thought so much of this
great
bird that they made it the symbol of our country - certainly
a
better choice than the wild turkey, which Benjamin Franklin
suggested! Soaring high overhead, its keen eyes scanning the land
far below for prey, the bald eagle is a spectacular sight, and it's
hard to watch this regal bird fly by without feeling a stirring of
the soul.
This wonderful specimen is one of several that frequent a park
near
where I live, not far from Seattle, Washington. The adults
often
perch in a tall fir tree, watchful and alert, and juveniles -
lacking the yellow beaks and distinctive white head and tail
feathers - can sometimes be seen as well.
While I was at the park
this past weekend, I saw this eagle flying
by on its way to roost,
and managed to get several images. This
one is my favorite, because
it seems to evoke a feeling of the
strength and graceful, controlled
power for which the bald eagle
is justly famous.
The Founding Fathers were wise and visionary men in many, many
ways,
and the selection of this magnificent bird as the symbol of
our
great land is just one more example of the pride and hope they
felt
for our nation, and which generations of Americans have shared
ever
since. I for one cannot watch one of these birds soaring
overhead
without feeling my spirit soar with it."
