Picture of the Day - June 1, 2009

"Solar Prominence"

Close-up photo of the sun and a very large Solar Prominence.

When we earthlings look at the sun with our naked eyes, all we can see is a glowing round ball that appears to be nice and smooth around the edges, but in reality that isn't the case at all. The nuclear-induced turmoil within the solar core and numerous ever-present and ultra-powerful magnetic fields combine to keep the surface of our amazing star in a constant state of upheaval.

The horseshoe-shaped band of gas in the upper right corner is a very pronounced solar prominence, and although this one is quite large and interestingly shaped, it is by no means a rarity. Our sun is one of the Creator's most awesome creations, and without it we would simply be unable to survive here on planet earth.

What an amazing shot! Most people probably have no clue that the surface of the sun is so turbulent.
