Southern Pacific Daylight No. 4449

Photo of the historic Southern Pacific Daylight No. 4449.
Photo and narrative by Ron E. Trees.                (Click on the photo for a larger view)

This last Friday, my wife, daughter and I took a trip to town. We took a route that we don’t normally take. We crossed over a large overpass and noticed a fair amount of people standing around with cameras. I knew something was going on, but had no idea what so I stopped and asked. They told me that there was a steam locomotive that had left Portland, Oregon that morning and was due to arrive in Spokane, Washington soon. I waited around for a while but no train. Since it was about 93 degrees out, we decided that we would not wait any longer.

When we got into town we checked the BNSF yard and found some people waiting there also, but no train. I honestly am not a train buff at all, but figured that with so many people waiting to see this train, it must be worth seeing. We did our shopping and went back to the yard and heard reports that the train would be there shortly. What pulled in was indeed a pretty neat old train. It was pulling ten cars behind it, including some passenger cars, and a dinner car with a glass top. It is just always very cool to me to see history like this that someone cares enough about to keep alive.

If you would like to read more about this train, please visit this site. There are many pictures there and much more about the history of the train. In the coming days, I will add more photos to my gallery as I get them developed.

I used my Sony A700 camera with the Sony 18-250mm lens. This is an HDR image that is using three different images at three different exposures and then Photomatix Pro 3 to combine them, and then finishing with Adobe Lightroom 2.4.

For now, I hope that you enjoy this photo of rolling history.   --Ron Trees
