Spruce Flats Falls
Photo and narrative by

It's been raining a lot here in the Smokies for several weeks.
Hiking even the relatively short trail to Spruce Flats Falls calls
for caution as the trail crosses slippery mud and rocks. And, like
many of the other trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park,
a fall from the trail would often mean a nasty drop from great
heights.
But the pursuit of anything of value is almost always a challenge.
The effort we make in obtaining our hearts desire makes reaching our
goals all the more rewarding. Once reached, sharing our
accomplishments with others only multiplies their worth.
Like all the photographers whose work is featured on
TodaysPhoto.org, I hope the modest effort made to reach and
photograph this example of Natures' beauty brings you the same joy
and peace I experienced during yesterday's rainy day hike. You'll
find many more of my images in
my online gallery. Here are the camera and settings used to
capture this image:

Very nice Gordon. Your photographs of the Smoky Mountain region are
wonderful, and it's great to know that your opportunities for taking
more of them are virtually unlimited.

Looks like a lovely spot. I really enjoy woodland streams and
waterfalls, and agree completely with your comments about what it
takes to "get the shot". The best opportunities are often a little
out of the way, but so well worth the extra effort to reach them.
Nice job, Gordon!

Lovely waterfalls! There is both power and softness in this image
and I feel a real invitation to sit on the edge of this scene and
just breath in the freshness.

Going the extra mile most often yields the best results. I'm sure
glad Mr. Brugman shares that philosophy to bring us this great
photograph. The rain brings out great richness in colors and
textures, and I love the softness of the water as it joins the
stream. Great photo.

Gordon, I have been to these falls before but I have never seen them
look like this. This is a beautiful picture. Thank you for sharing
this with us!!!
