A Squirrel Out On A Limb

I got up early this morning to take
Houdini
out for his morning walk, and just as soon as we walked out the back
door he spotted a squirrel sitting in the middle of the lawn gnawing on
one of the numerous black walnuts that had fallen from the trees
last autumn. As we made our way around the perimeter of the yard,
Mr. Squirrel cautiously scampered up a nearby walnut tree and found
himself a perch on a limb where he could watch our every move.
Since the path we always take on our walks has Houdini and me
walking right under that limb, I expected our furry friend to climb
farther up the tree as we came near. But much to my surprise, the
fearless rodent simply sat there on his perch gnawing on the walnut,
all the while keeping an eye on me and my "master" as we walked
right underneath him. I suppose he has seen us walking around the
yard enough times to know that we have no interest in having him for
dinner!
Well, we continued walking along our usual route out of the yard and
along the creek bank that runs through our long field. When we
reached the other end, Houdini completed the task that he had come
to do and we started back towards the house. I figured that Mr.
Squirrel would surely be gone by the time we got back to his tree,
but there he sat in the very same spot still chomping on his walnut.
I quickly but quietly took Houdini back into the house and grabbed
my camera, then returned to the tree and took the "Picture of the
Day".
