Star Trails over Pismo Beach

Photo courtesy of Jonathan Nevelson. On April 20 of last year the "Picture of the Day" featured a beautiful sunset at California's Pismo Beach. Well, today's picture by photographer Jonathan Nevelson also features Pismo Beach, but the scene is strikingly different from the earlier one. To capture this amazing nighttime image complete with star trails, Mr. Nevelson waited until 2am before placing his Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT on a tripod and taking a 19 minute 16 second exposure at f/13. A low ISO setting of 200 kept the digital noise to a minimum, and the result is the virtually perfect image featured above. I have always been fascinated by the night sky, and when I first saw this beautiful photograph I knew it was destined to be a "Picture of the Day".
