Spectacular storm cloud over Cibolo, Texas

A nighttime thunderstorm is an amazing thing to watch, especially if you're
brave enough to stand beside a window while lightning is
periodically turning night into day (the "experts" recommend against
that). There is awesome power in a
lightning bolt with up to one billion volts and 200,000 amps of
current traveling through the air, occasionally striking
something on the ground. Most often, whatever it strikes is burned
to a crisp in the blink of an eye.
A powerful thunderstorm never fails to amaze me. And yes, I have to
admit that I'm one of the many nuts who love to stand at a window
and watch nature's fury dance among the clouds. You'll never
experience a man-made "show" that comes anywhere near rivaling the
ones put on by mother nature.
Photographer Barb Weir recently captured this spectacular image of
an intra-cloud thunderbolt in the sky over Cibolo, TX. Here are the
camera and settings she used to such great effect:
Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure time: 30 seconds
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO: 100

What a breathtaking shot and a thought-provoking write-up. I'll
never look at a thunderstorm the same way again!

I love the mix of foreground color as it blends to the ominous dark
storm clouds. The way she captured the cloud details just as the
lightning burst is really amazing. Nice photo Barb!
