A snowy afternoon on Straight Branch

Rick Rouse.
One of the best things about southwestern Virginia is the abundance
of natural beauty that can be found all around the region, and on US
Highway 58 between Damascus, Virginia and the mountain community of
Konnarock you'll find a magnificent stream known simply as "Straight
Branch".
Now whoever gave Straight Branch its name must surely have
done so tongue in cheek. You see, Straight Branch is just about as
"crooked" as they come - in fact, its waters pass under Highway 58
over a dozen times on the short journey from Konnarock to Damascus!
But the sheer beauty of this mountain stream with its thousands of
moss-covered rocks and numerous small rapids and waterfalls makes
for some of the most amazing scenery you will find anywhere. And
when a bit of snow is on the ground, the vistas are even more
spectacular.
A few days ago Cheria and I took a drive up Highway 58 in search of
some snowy mountain scenery, and as you can see in today's picture,
we found some. Photographs never do this amazing place justice, so
if you ever find yourself in Abingdon or Damascus you owe it to
yourself to take the short drive up 58 and experience the beauty of
Straight Branch and the mountains of southwestern Virginia for
yourself!
