March 26, 2007 A Scenic Waterfall On Straight Branch

The most popular section of the famous
Virginia Creeper Trail winds its way along a scenic 17 mile
route between
Damascus, Virginia and
Whitetop Station, and in a number of places it crosses
Straight Branch, one of the country's most popular trout fishing
streams. Whoever named this beautiful creek Straight Branch must
surely have done so as a joke because the "straight" sections are
few and far between.
One thing that isn't lacking on Straight Branch however are
mini-waterfalls. In fact, there are literally hundreds of them along
the creek bed where the water tumbles over boulders and ledges of
various sizes. Today's picture features one of the most spectacular
series of falls in the bunch.
After church let out yesterday morning, Cheria and I decided to take
advantage of yet another gorgeous spring day by driving over to
Damascus where we would set out on the short journey up U.S. Highway
58 towards Konnarock. This is without a doubt one of the most
enjoyable drives in the entire state, and we take it fairly often.
We had made our way just a few miles "upstream" when out of the
corner of my eye I spotted the gorgeous waterfall featured above. I
parked the car at the first opportunity, walked back to that
spot...and captured the "Picture Of The Day"!
