"The Drifters" at the 2007 Virginia Highlands Festival "Beach Bash"

Every summer the beautiful and historic town of Abingdon,
Virginia hosts the Virginia Highlands Festival, a two week
celebration featuring the finest in arts and crafts, great food, and live
entertainment galore. The town always kicks off the festival with the
"Beach Bash", a highly popular event where they block off a large
section of Main Street and turn it into a sandy "beach" by dumping
and spreading around dozens of dump truck loads of sand.
Then, from 6-10pm, thousands of folks sit on the "beach" in their
lawn chairs and listen to a famous group from the 1960's sing a
bunch of the great oldies that many of us remember from our
youth. The musical entertainment for this year's Beach Bash was
provided by none other than
The Drifters! |

The Drifters began their legendary career way back in 1953, and
for more than a decade they turned out hit after hit, including such
classics as "Save the Last Dance for Me", "Up on the Roof",
"On Broadway", and what is surely one of the most
popular songs ever recorded: the ever-popular "Under the Boardwalk".
These days The Drifters are staying busy entertaining audiences all
around the country with their still-superb performances of their
timeless classics, and they were certainly a big hit at last night's
Beach Bash! You can find a lot more information about this amazing
group by
