"Tiger Stripes" on Enceladus

Close-up of Saturn's moon Enceladus captured by Cassini.

The surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus is covered with lines that vaguely resemble tiger stripes, and in this recent image by the robotic spacecraft Cassini, several "new" stripes can be seen. NASA scientists have long speculated that the stripes are created when vast underground oceans vent and spew ice from the frigid surface out into space. The discovery of new stripes is indicative of active oceans instead of frozen, sedentary ones.

Cassini and it's amazing robotic cousins are bringing us close-up images of our celestial neighbors that could only exist in our dreams and imaginations just a few decades ago, giving us a window into our vast solar system and the universe that lays beyond.
