Picture of the day -
May 3, 2008 "Sea of tulips"

Today's picture by photographer Cyan Li shows us two things: 1... A "sea"
of gorgeous tulips growing on a Dutch flower farm, and 2... How the
judicious use of depth of field can add interest to what might
otherwise be just another "run of the mill" image created with a
digital camera.
Holland is famous for its windmills and its tulips, and I have
featured both of them within the pages of this site. But the
photographer's masterful use of depth of field to isolate the sharp
focus to the center of the image makes this photograph stand out in
the crowd. If you're interested in re-creating this effect, all you
need to do is use a lens that supports a shallow depth of field - and
practice a bit.
To get you started, here are the camera and settings used to capture
this image:
Camera: Canon EOS 300D
Aperture: F/2.8
Focal length: 50mm
Shutter speed: 1/500 of a second
ISO: 100
