Picture of the day -
March 6, 2007 Late Afternoon On The Virginia Creeper Trail

The mission of the
Rails to Trails
Conservancy is to preserve the history and beauty of the many
abandoned railroad spurs located throughout the United States by
converting them into hiking and biking trails. There are now
literally hundreds of these trails in use across the country, and
one of the most popular of them all is the spectacular
Virginia Creeper Trail.
The Virginia Creeper Trail extends 34.5 miles from its starting point in
Abingdon,
Va to
Whitetop Station near the North Carolina border, and there is plenty of magnificent scenery
to be found along the entire route.
Today's picture offers a glimpse of one of those pretty scenes...
The weather was absolutely gorgeous in historic Abingdon yesterday afternoon,
so I decided to take a stroll on the Creeper Trail. I had just
parked my car at the trailhead and started walking across the first
trestle when I noticed how the late afternoon sun was casting such
interesting shadows in the woods and on the bridge. I had my camera
with me as usual so I turned it on and snapped a few pictures. I
liked this one the best - and now it is the "Picture Of The Day".
