Picture of the day - December 29, 2008
Vatican City

Stanford Moore.
Vatican City has long been the spiritual home and supreme
headquarters of the Catholic church. It is also a favorite stop for
the thousands of tourists who visit the great city of Rome each
year.
This "city within in a city" offers her visitors the
opportunity to visit (and photograph) some of the world's most
famous buildings and see many priceless works of art that were created by a
number of the great masters, including Michelangelo himself.
This picture was taken by photographer Stanford Moore as he was standing
on top of the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica immediately after Pope Benedict
XVI had finished conducting mass. You can see St. Peter's Square and the
city of Rome lying just beyond the Tiber river.
