The Washington Monument at night

The Washington
Monument is one of the most recognizable and revered
structures in all of our great nation. Built in the late 1800's to
commemorate the amazing life and self-less service of
President George Washington, the monument stands over 555 feet
tall making it the dominant feature of the Washington, DC skyline.
This wonderful image by photographer Aaron Smallwood has captured the
subtle nighttime beauty of the monument with a softly glowing
Capitol Hill in the background.
Washington has numerous monuments to our founding fathers and many
others who helped build our nation and served to protect and keep
her free, but the Washington Monument towers above them all - both
literally and in our hearts and minds.

Makes one very proud and humble. You can be both at once.

As a naturalized American citizen who earned it without taking the
easy route, I must say that this picture is dear to my heart.
Although I grew up here, I was born in another country where freedom
was (and still is) nothing more than a dream. My family came here
(legally) when I was three years old, and my parents worked night
and day to ensure that my sisters and I had a real chance at the
American dream. They also instilled in us a burning desire to become
citizens of our adopted homeland. We all did, and we are all so
proud to be Americans. I have a deep love for my country and its
history, and while I treasure my ancestral roots I am first and
foremost an American. Thank you so much for this beautiful picture!

Mr. Ruiz, you have my deepest respect, and it's an honor having you
as a fellow American.
