Purple water lily

Photo courtesy of Hoang Anh Vu.
Yesterday's "Picture of the Day" featured a glorious
sunrise in Vietnam, and today's photograph of a beautiful purple
water lily blossom comes to us from just across that country's
western border in Cambodia.
Water lilies of many varieties can be found all around the world,
and every time I see some of their broad leaves and spectacular
blossoms covering the surface of a pond I'm reminded of
my wonderful dad.
I remember how dad loved to sit on the little bench beside his
backyard fish pond and toss tiny pieces of bread into the water for
the fish to chow down on. Just as soon as a morsel would hit the
water, several fish would scramble to the surface as if they were
competing against one another to see who could take home the prize.
When the feeding was going on in earnest, the water lilies would
shimmer and shake like they might in the midst of a 7.5 earthquake!
Dad loved his water lilies almost as much as he loved his fish, and
although he never had the chance to travel to exotic places around
the globe, I'm sure he would have enjoyed visiting the magnificent
water gardens that can be found in so many of them.
