Florence Martus: Savannah, Georgia's "Waving Girl"
I spent several years of my life in the state of Georgia, and in my
opinion the most beautiful place in the entire state by far is the
historic coastal
city of Savannah. Stately old houses on streets lined with trees
that are "dripping" with Spanish Moss as well as enough history to
fill several large volumes make this amazing place a must-see should
you ever have occasion to visit the "old south".
Today's picture features a very intriguing glimpse at a bit of
Savannah's storied history, and the following is the photographer's
story behind the image:
"This photo was taken by me, Glen Dykstra, during a business trip
to Savannah. Date of the photo was 9/10/2007 at 6:55 PM. This
statue
can be found in Savannah off River Street, which runs along
the
Savannah River on the coast of Georgia.
This is a photo of the statue of Florence Martus, Savannah Georgia's
"Waving Girl", who became known throughout the seafaring world.
There are many stories, but the most popular story was that of a
sailor sweetheart who was lost at sea. She waved at other seamen,
the story goes, as a tribute to her lost love. She never verified
the
story, but she never denied it either. It is said that she never
missed
a ship, coming or going, day or night, for 44 years."
