Picture of the day - October 30, 2008

Fall in the Wenatchee River Valley

Autumn scene from Washington State's Wenatchee River Valley.

Photographer Winston Rockwell has had over 30 images featured on TodaysPhoto.org so far, and for good reason: Each and every photograph that he graciously submits for our consideration as a "Picture of the Day" is a literal work of art. Today's picture is certainly no exception, and here is Mr. Rockwell himself to tell you about it:
"Fall is well under way, and in some places, has already passed its
peak, but here in the Wenatchee River valley, near the town of
Leavenworth, WA, there's still plenty of gold in them thar hills! The
vine maples have mostly shed their crimson leaves, but the aspens
and birches and poplars are putting on quite a show, streaking the
hillsides with bands of brilliant yellow and gold.

This is one of those scenes that reminds us that even though summer
is past, and the warm, sunny days are gone for now, every season
has its own beauty. Standing on the riverbank, listening to the chuckle
of the water on the stones, the rustle of the drying leaves in the wind,
and the calls of occasional birds, I was struck - as I am so many times
on my photo "outings" - by the pure and simple beauty of nature.

Scenes like this are why I do what I do, to capture that moment, to
preserve some of that beauty for posterity, because, sadly, places
like this will not be this pristine forever. It's up to each of us to do
what we can to protect these wild places, so that our children can
enjoy scenes like this in person, not just in photographs taken by
    folks like me...

I shot this photograph a few days ago on a day trip across the
mountains to Leavenworth, WA. It was taken with a Canon 5D and
Tamron SP17-35 lens at 17mm, with nominal exposure set at 1/40 sec
and f/13. I shot multiple exposures, and blended them in Photomatix
to bring out the details in the shadows in the foreground."

If I had to choose a modern day photographer that was my favorite, I think that it would be Mr. Rockwell. I have never seen one of his photographs that was not extremely pleasing to my eyes. I love his work and I look forward to many more of his images. This is another just sensational picture Rocky!!
