White's Mill on a "winter day"

The beautiful town of
Abingdon, Virginia is steeped in history and
tradition, and her many historic buildings reflect a way of life
that, while hard, was also quite fulfilling. And one of the Abingdon
area's most beloved old buildings of all is
White's Mill.
The history of White's Mill dates all the way back to the years
preceding the
Civil War, and during the war this national icon came
under attack by union forces on at least two occasions. The
"Yankees" eventually succeeded at knocking the giant water wheel
from its axis, but an attempt to burn the building to the ground was
thwarted by a heavy thunderstorm. Today, the mill is back in limited
operation, and plans are in the works to restore the wheel and large
grinding stone and place them back in operation as well.
White's Mill is one of Abingdon's most photographed structures, and
I have taken a number of pictures of her myself over the years. But
since this is my first "wintertime" White's Mill photo, I decided to
make it the "Picture of the Day".
