A Widener Valley, Virginia Pasture Field

Widener Valley is a quiet farming community in southwestern
Virginia, and as a know-it-all teenager I just couldn't wait to get
out of there. Milking cows, slopping hogs, putting up hay and
working in tobacco didn't appeal to me one bit, and there always
seemed to be a lot of that going on in Widener Valley. I just knew
there was a whole new world far from these hills and hollers
beckoning for me to come and live the good life.
Well, I spent several years living in various cities and large
towns, but the good life that I had been so determined to find for
myself never materialized. I grew to understand that every place on
the planet has its share of problems and that excitement doesn't
necessarily equate to happiness. It didn't take me very long to
realize that the world is a very large and extremely complicated
place, and going out into it with unrealistic expectations rarely
leads to "the good life".
Today, I find myself living once again in southwestern Virginia. My
life still isn't perfect, and of course it won't be until I
get to heaven. But life is great because I have a wonderful,
loving wife, a precious mother, and a beautiful granddaughter with
another one on the way. And most important of all, I have my beloved
Saviour waiting for me to come join Him some day.
Although I don't
live in Widener Valley, I can hop in my car and be there in just a
few minutes. And while I still have no desire to be a farmer,
driving past all of those pasture fields and barnyards leaves me
with the feeling that I'm truly "back home".
About the photo: Cheria snapped this picture of some Widener
Valley farmland a couple of days ago during one of our frequent
visits to "the valley". Spring hasn't yet sprung - but it's just
around the corner. And even though the grass is still brown, the
southwestern Virginia countryside is still a beautiful sight to this
country boy's eyes!
