The Winster Valley Of Cumbria

The British Isles boast some of the planet's most beautiful
scenery. Rocky north Atlantic shorelines, picturesque lakes, grassy
meadows, rolling hillsides, snow-covered peaks... If it belongs on a
postcard you'll probably find it there!
We Americans are quite familiar with the region's rich history since
our own nation's roots are firmly planted on British soil. American
school children learn all about the kings and castles of the mother
country as well as the hard lives endured by the masses during
medieval times. But in the eyes of many Americans, today's England is
simply a far-off place with little relevance to our modern lives.
But many others recognize the unique relationship that we Americans
share with our brothers and sisters across the Atlantic. When we
proclaimed our independence in 1776 and then fought a long, hard war
to gain it, we became a sovereign nation and never looked back. But
still today we look to Great Britain for help in trying times - and
with few exceptions we get it, just as we came to their aid during
World War II.
We may not see eye-to-eye on every issue, but the British remain our
best friends and closest allies in Europe, and even though we "split
apart" over 230 years ago, we still share a proud heritage and
optimistic vision for the future. Let's hope it always stays that
way.
About the photo: Stuart Hill's stunning picture of the Winster
Valley in the county of Cumbria shows just how beautiful the British
countryside can be.
